Bariatric surgeons at Central Baptist Hospital perform the state’s first stomach folding procedure
Bariatric surgeons Dr. G. Derek Weiss and Dr. John S. Oldham, Jr. performed the first Laparoscopic Greater Curvature Plication (LGCP) procedure in Kentucky on January 17, 2011 at Central Baptist Hospital. LGCP is a new type of minimally invasive weight-loss surgery which involves oversewing the outer part of the stomach so that it holds considerably less food. There is no cutting, removing or bypassing of the stomach in this reversible procedure.
The LGCP was pioneered by renowned surgeon Dr. Phillip R. Schauer, Director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Weiss, Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at Central Baptist Hospital, was among an elite group of surgeons chosen from only 12 bariatric surgery practices throughout the United States to be the first trained to perform the LGCP procedure under Dr. Schauer.
At Central Baptist, Drs. Weiss and Oldham performed this 1 ½ -hour laparoscopic procedure on a 37-year-old woman with a history of morbid obesity, severe hypertension, diabetes and sleep apnea.
