Annual Report

Baptist Healthcare System began as a single hospital in 1924 with the opening of the 120-bed Kentucky Baptist Hospital in Louisville. The system was formed following the opening in 1953 of the 117-bed Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah and the 1954 opening of the 173-bed Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington. Today Baptist Healthcare System is the largest not-for-profit healthcare system in Kentucky.

Baptist Healthcare System consists of 519-bed Baptist Hospital East located in Louisville, 371-bed Central Baptist Hospital located in Lexington, 373-bed Western Baptist Hospital located in Paducah, 273-bed Baptist Regional Medical Center located in Corbin, and 120-bed Baptist Hospital Northeast located in LaGrange. Baptist Healthcare System manages 300-bed Hardin Memorial Hospital located in Elizabethtown and the Patti A. Clay Regional Medical Center in Richmond, Ky. The system also owns Bluegrass Family Health, a not-for-profit provider sponsored health plan. In addition the system owns or has ownership in two surgery centers, occupational medicine clinics, diagnostic centers, urgent care centers, and physician practices.

Baptist Healthcare System has adopted a management philosophy that fosters decentralized control with strong local administrative boards and staff. Each facility determines how best to meet the needs of that particular community, adding or altering services offered as needed.

Although fostering decentralized management, there is a robust focus on centralization and standardization to achieve best practices to support high quality, cost effective patient care. The information technology, patient billing, and supply chain services are centralized to enhance efficiency and reduce redundancy. Supply chain savings for the fiscal year were substantial.  The System has established system patient quality performance goals which, when compared to U.S. hospital results, the System consistently performs better than the U.S. hospital average.
